Summary :

Horizontal Directional Drilling (H.D.D.-technique) is a trenchless technology for the underground infrastructure (gas, water and oil piping, telecom and electricity cables). This technique can be conducted from surface level. In addition, the H.D.D. drillings can be directed in a radius of curvature.

H.D.D. drilling consists of three phases:

Pilot-drilling
During a pilot phase the drill bit is pushed through the earth by a ‘rig’ (drilling machine). The drill hole is on average 1.2 to 1.5 times the size of the drill bit. The diameter of the bit varies between 50 and 250 mm.

Reaming the drill hole.
After the drill bit has completed a drilling, it is replaced by a fly-cutter. This is pulled back through the drill hole and thus enlarges the drill hole.

Pulling a product pipe.
When the reamer has sufficiently enlarged the drill hole, it is replaced by a final reamer and a product pipe, which is entirely rolled out.

Drill rigs
Today A.Hak Drillcon has 14 modern drill rigs and 12 complete spreads. Despite their compact size the machines supply a maximum tractive force (4 to 400 tonnes), an optimal torque and a large pumping capacity. This allows large drillings to be executed with relatively small machines.

Maxi- and Mega rigs
With the use of our H.D.D.-maxi and mega rigs we can easily drill lengths up to or over 1.000 – 1.500 meters with a maximum diameter of 56″ (Ø 1.422 mm). In addition to our own equipment we have various H.D.D. mega-rigs with maximum tractive force (250 to 400 tonnes). This allows us to drill lengths of over 2.500 meters and pull pipes in with a diameter up to 56”.
All our drillspreads are equipped with their own crew and deployed both, in The Netherlands and globally around the world.

Pipe Thrusters
We have several Pipe Thrusters with capacities up to 500 and 750 tonnes.
They can be used as assistance at the pull-back phase on large H.D.D. projects.
